Layer 5 Labs is an independent studio. We believe the best tools do one thing, do it exceptionally, and respect the professional using them. Every Maker product follows that rule.
About the founder
Bascomb Grecian
Bascomb Grecian is an entrepreneur and product architect whose career has crossed petroleum, financial services, aviation, government affairs, enterprise sales, and technology. He has spent more than a decade inside fuel distribution and retail, working directly with the suppliers, dealers, and commercial relationships that keep the industry running. Earlier, he held Series 7 and Series 66 securities licenses and flew professionally as a commercial air ambulance and organ transport pilot.
He founded Layer 5 Labs as a venture studio built on a single observation: many mature systems have four working layers but are missing a fifth. That missing layer is usually trust, verification, permission, transparency, or control. Layer 5 Labs develops and tests businesses designed to supply it, and Bascomb is currently developing more than ten startup companies through the studio.
Among them, he is the technical founder of KOVRA Pay, a permission-based platform being developed around financial transactions and explicit authorization. He is also developing AI-powered technology that investigates complex commercial transactions and turns the underlying documents and data into verifiable financial evidence.
His approach is straightforward: find a costly problem he understands firsthand, build the smallest system capable of solving it, put it in front of real customers, and let the evidence decide how large it can become.
Before building companies, Bascomb spent years in the cockpit, where checklists, preflight discipline, and knowing all available information were not optional. He brings the same discipline to every venture.
